Why Do You Blog?

A fellow blogger posted this question over on the 2peas message board (thread is HERE). I thought I’d share my answer, well, on my blog! Here is what my answer was:
~~~~~~~~~~
I started my scrapbook blog over 3 years ago because I am truly obsessed with scrapbooking and I wanted someone to “talk to” who would understand. I have IRL friends who scrapbook but I only see them at crops every few months, and we talk about scrapbooking for hours while we scrap. But I got tired of holding all my good info for crops, LOL! DH calls it “crap-booking,” so you can see I get no support at home, lol …
So I started my blog as a place where I could write down all the thoughts I was having on the industry (which was much more hoppin’ and not quite so depressing at the time). I also wanted to share the deals I found, talk about SB events I went to, what was going on at my LSS’s (used to have 7, now have none), drool over new products, tell scrappers what TV shows and movies featured scrapping, etc.
About a year ago, I started incorporating my thoughts and experiences about being a scrapbook consultant, in the hopes that I can save others from making any mistakes I did, share what’s been successful for me, and again … drool over all the new products Also, I’m often asked questions about becoming a consultant and it’s nice to have one place I can refer people to for information.
Due to the economy, I’ve had to work a lot more hours and I don’t get to blog as much as I used to, and I REALLY REALLY miss it. I so enjoy the comments people leave … even just looking at my blog stats and seeing that people do read what I’m sharing. It makes me feel really good inside. I truly enjoy the exchanges I have there about scrapbooking and I think I’ll keep doing my blog forevah!
So, why do YOU blog?
Katie Holmes, A Scrapbooker?
Read all about it HERE. I heard this first from A POST on 2peas, then I posted it at AMR.
*Photo and story are from www.CELEBITCHY.com…cool gossip site…
If it’s true, I think it’s pretty cool. I would really envy her. She doesn’t seem to be working much these days so time is plentiful. She has unlimited money and, apparently, a fancy scrapbook room. She has a gorgeous family and fabulous trips and famous friends to scrapbook about. I’d say she has the ideal life for a scrapper! You GO, Katie!
Sketches for 4×6 Photos
Via a POST on 2peas, I found this wonderful PLACE called “4×6 Photo Sketch Blog.” The blog writer, Amy Alvis, wrote a 2peas post showing people how to convert the sketches in Becky Fleck’s PAGE MAPS BOOK to accomodate 4×6 photos. Apparently, some scrappers have stated they’re passing on the book because she doesn’t include enough sketches using 4×6 photos.
Okay, as a side note, I’ll say that I passed on the book when I saw it in the store the other day AND had my hot little 40% coupon in my hand…because as I flipped through, I didn’t see enough MULTI-photo pages. I gotta’ tell ya, I’m tired of all the 1-photo and 2-photo “page ideas.” I’m sorry, but MOST of (yes, I’m generalizing here, not saying it’s true for the entire world) the scrappers in Scrapper World don’t scrap that way. MOST of us like to scrap the majority of our pics and not leave them sitting in boxes. I mean, c’mon, now we’ve even got digital, and digital SLR’s for gosh sake. Can you say, “Dear Lord, I just took 4,200 pictures at my daughter’s soccer game?” {While wine tasting last weekend – oh yes, dahling, I lurvvvve to wine taste – my digital-SLR scrapper friend confessed that she has 58,000 photos on her computer…and she’s only had that camera for 2 years}. So, you can’t tell me that MOST of us are really scrapping 1 or 2 photos at a time. I mean, don’t even TRY because I just won’t stinkin’ believe you, okay? There might be a skewed vision of how we all scrap, because MOST designer’s pages contain 1 or 2 photos…but they are scrapping because they are showcasing their artistry or they are showcasing “product.” Which is fine and dandy because I’m the first to say, “Show me some product!” However…oh, crap, I should’ve just done a whole separate post about single-photo vs. multi-photo scrapping, shouldn’t I of?? {<- hee, luv my bad grammar, dontcha?}
But back to my point, I didn’t buy the Page Maps book because I wanted to see more multi-photo layouts, and many must be passing because they want to see 4×6 photo layouts. And now I’m back to the real point of this post…check out Amy’s sketch blog, K? It’s a very, very, supremely wicked blog. She just started it but I hope to send her some traffic and encourage her to keep posting those great sketches. For instance, check out this coolio sketch and the layout that goes with it:
***** SKETCH AND LAYOUT BY AMY ALVIS *****
See, she got all those photos on there, some great journaling, and she rocked those embellishments. You CAN have it all…
Lisa and David on QVC: More Than Friendly Play?
Sniff…sniff…uh oh! Do you smell another controversy? Just kidding, no big deal, but check out THIS thread from 2peas. Lisa B.’s little sister even chimes in. I’m so mad at myself! I was watching this episode on Tivo today but got distracted with something else. I heard the exchange between them about a slap but didn’t pay attention and think I deleted the episode when I was done. Wish I could see it for myself. Can’t say who’s right or wrong…did anyone see it?
CK: The Scrapbooker’s Ultimate Products Guide
ck guide
Like most things CK these days, this newly-released product guide/special issue is already causing a stir among the scrapping masses. Discussions on 2Peas: HERE and HERE. One Pea was so unhappy, she gave her issue away FOR FREE. Debate on CKMB: HERE, HERE and HERE (this one is harshing on not just the product review issue, but CK of late, in general). I just bought mine at the grocery store lastnight (as I no longer subscribe)(but not for the reason you think).
Let me see if I can sum up the “issues” with this issue:
~ Paying good money for a scrapbook magazine that features only 3 or 4 layouts (15 if you count those in advertisements)
~ Just one big advertisement for their sponsors
~ Doesn’t give a complete list of things like electronic cutters
~ Apparently replaced the Top 10 Issue, which everyone seems to have liked (at least in comparison to this)
~ No “How To’s” to USE the products featured
~ Nothing new is featured, stuff we’ve seen before, “so last week”
~ Geared toward newbie scrappers
~ Couldn’t access online links that were listed, and why not just include that content in the magazine in the first place?
~ Not consistent in use of comparison charts, or in featuring ALL of a certain type of product
And with CK magazine in general lately:
~ Too much digital now
~ Bland, uninspiring, dog-earing a lot fewer pages
~ Less layouts
~ Less pages, more ads
~ Layouts are shown so small you can’t read the journaling, even when the article is about journaling
~ Would like to see more scraprooms, more of the latest products being used in layouts
~ What’s with the “lifestyle” articles like How You Met Your Spouse?
~ Going more toward altered projects and paper crafts vs. scrapbooking, which is okay just keep it to a moderate level not put it on the cover
~ Would like more from HOF and SOY scrappers
On a positive note:
~ Like the new cover style
~ Like the Dream Team, Candice Stringham, computer and photography tips, Jennifer McGuire, Fresh Faces
~ CK was responsive to complaints by getting rid of Organize It, Easy Patterns, and the full page photos of Ali Edwards, et al.
Disclaimer: Please note that the comments or points above are NOT my opinion, just a summary of what I read in the CKMB and 2peas threads.
What did you think of the issue, and of CK magazine in general lately? Are you liking the Product Guide and all the changes CK is making?
